5 Tips to Get Productive When You’ve Had a Bad Night Sleep

It’s 8am and you’re staring at the computer screen, struggling to focus on the email you’re writing, let alone being able to think about the other tasks you need to do today. You keep yawning and your head is pounding – it’s clear that you didn’t get a good night sleep, possibly self-induced!? I know this is usually the case for me when there’s a major sporting event I’m following on TV that’s taking place across the other side of the world.

So now what? How can you still be productive when your body is begging to just get back into bed? Here are 5 tips to help get your mind and body back into work mode:

– Get up and move: It might be the last thing you feel like doing when you’re exhausted, but getting your body moving will help increase your energy levels. Take a quick walk around the block or do some simple stretches at your desk. Maybe even consider rescheduling a meeting and making it a walk-and-talk.

– Drink lots of water: Staying hydrated is important for both your physical and mental health, so make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

– Eat healthy: Eating foods that are high in protein and complex carbohydrates will help give you sustained energy throughout the day. Avoid sugary snacks as they will only give you a quick burst of energy followed by an inevitable crash.

– Take breaks: It’s important to take breaks throughout the day, even if you feel like you can’t afford to. Step away from your work for a few minutes and clear your head. Maybe do some deep breathing exercises or meditate for a couple of minutes. I try to do some golf chipping practice in my living room.

– Get organised: This one is especially important if you’re feeling overwhelmed by everything you need to do. Take a few minutes to write down everything that’s on your mind and then prioritise what needs to be done. Once you have a plan, it will be easier to focus and get things done.

Despite not getting a good night sleep, by following these tips you can still remain productive throughout the day. Don’t beat yourself up for one bad day so long as it doesn’t become a regular occurrence.

Just remember to listen to your body and take breaks when you need to on those days. And hopefully next time, you’ll get a better night sleep!
