The Pomodoro Technique – Get More Done in Less Time

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management strategy that can help you increase your focus and get more done. It involves breaking down your work into short, timed intervals and taking short breaks in between. By using this technique, you can eliminate distractions and improve your productivity. In this blog post, we will discuss how to use the Pomodoro Technique and some tips for getting the most out of it.

Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the 1980s, it is a simple time management method that uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks.  The technique has been widely popularised by dozens of apps and websites providing timers and instructions such as Pomofocus. However, it is just as easy to set a 25 min timer on your smart phone or digital watch.

The Pomodoro Technique is based on the idea that we are more productive when working in short bursts with frequent breaks. By breaking down our work into intervals and taking regular breaks, we can eliminate distractions and improve our focus. The timer also helps us to stay disciplined and focused, as it is difficult to break away from a task once it has started.
This time management discipline is not a cure-all for productivity problems, but it can be a helpful tool to use in conjunction with other time management strategies. Here are some tips for getting the most out of the technique:- Choose a task that you want to focus on and set the timer for 25 minutes- Work on the task until the timer goes off, then take a five minute break- Repeat this process for four more intervals, then take a longer break of 20-30 minutes

Some people find that they work best in shorter bursts with longer breaks, while others prefer to work in longer intervals with shorter breaks. You may need to experiment to find what works best for you.

Finding something to do for the 5 min break can be challenging.  It is best to avoid checking email or social media, as this can lead to more distractions. Instead, try taking a short walk, breathing exercises or stretching your muscles. Find an activity that is both fun and interesting. For example, executive golfers could try putting or chipping drills for 5 mins before getting back to work.

When using the technique, it is important to stay focused and not take any breaks until after each interval has ended. If you need to take a break before then, set an alarm or timer so that you can remind yourself when it’s time to get back on track with your work schedule.

Completing tasks and staying focused is now more important more so than ever with many working from home. Hybrid work arrangements has seen some people struggle with setting firm boundaries at home. The Pomodoro Technique is a useful tool for overcoming procrastination, increasing productivity and improving work-life balance due to how structured the technique is.
